Spend 6 hours downloading the whole RH7.1
Make the install diskette using the "boot.img" file, supposedly lets you install from floppy. Fine, NOT!
The stupid installer only looks for .iso images, EVEN IF you choose (from the limited menu) to install from HD, so downloading the whole (uncompressed) thing was a total waste of time.
Now I've got to spend another 4 or 5 hours downloading the .iso images.
Not sure if I'm going to have to burn them to CD and create another bootdisk yet. Installation instructions are a joke.
What a load of crap.
Mandrake 8 wan't this difficult, why can't RH (they're supposedly the best, bah!) make an installer that works?

if you burned them right, you can boot right off the CD! No need for a boot disk.

You miss my point.
WHY should I have to burn them first?
Lots of people don't have burners.
If it won't install from the uncompressed .rpm's, why do they provide them on the site?
If it won't install from the HD, why do they list it as an option in the installer?
For a newbie, this would REALLY cause one to just give up.
WHY CAN'T THEY write some @#%%^& install instructions in ENGLISH, instead of geekspeak?
Mandrake 8 is going to flush RH down the toilet, if they haven't already.

Mandrake 8 is the same way, IIRC, you have to install from the iso's when you do a harddrive install. No need for a burner. There's a boot image called hard.img; I think, that you can use to do a harddrive install. It's actually much quicker to download the iso's and do the harddrive install than it is to download all of the rpm's off of the ftp site.
Follow the instructions from this site, I know it works because I installed RH 7.1 on my machine from my windows partition with the iso's.

I really installed my RH71 with .iso images from HD. You dont need to burn the image to CD. If you have extracted all the files from the image, boot your machine to DOS and enter "dosutils" dir then execute autoboot.bat to start installation. If you still have the .iso image, just extract boot.img and write it to a floppy and boot the machine with the floppy to start the installation. Are u sure you gave the correct dir where the .iso image is to the installer? For example, I put the images in d:\RH71, so I gave this: /dev/hda4/RH71. BTW, maybe you need both .iso images of RH71 because some RPMs are in the second one.

Mandrake 8 will install from either the .iso or the .rpm's. I know, because I've installed MDK8 on 5 different machines (using both methods) this past week, all from the HD, and twice over LAN.
RH7.1 will NOT install from the .rpm's and must install from the .iso's even if you don't burn to CD, but NOWHERE in ANY instructions does it mention that you MUST install from .iso
