I ran Windows Defrag to optimize my Windows partition. Now, when I boot, GRUB won't run correctly (leaves me stuck at a command prompt.)

What happened?

I did an FDISK/MBR to clear Grub. How can I reinstall Grub. Better yet, how can I reinstall LILO? I hate Grub.

I have Mandrake 7.1. The only way I know of to install Grub or LILO is to reinstall the entire system from CD. I Don't wanna do that!

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Try LoadLin, it doesn't install to the MBR and Windows defrag will not bother it.

Complete step by step installation instructions AND LoadLin for Windows
(InstallShield version) is available from the following URL:

grub (my fave) as root - sh /boot/grub/install.sh

Do a search here http://support.calderasystems.com/caldera for grub and it should have the answers for you.

Thanks, all. Not only did defrag nix my Grub, it also nixed Linux.

NOT COOL!!! :-)

I'd put Linux on an entirely different hard drive, seeing how Windows can't control itself...
