I looked around for anybody else asking this question, but I didn't find anything.

I have Win2000 on a 40gig with about 20gig left, obviously I have schitload of room left. What I was curious about was, is their anyway to install Linux over 2k on the same partition? If u could briefly explain or send me a link, I would be much grateful.

Another question for you's, which distro goes the smoothest at installing?
What are u people's favorites versions?
My set is as follows ----->
P3 550mhz
384ram
Asus V6800 DDR
WD 40 gig HD
DVD & CD-R
SoundBlaster Live
Linksys NIC

1 thing im not expecting, is to be able to connect to the internet with linux, I go though Covad and they have me on this PPPoE crap, and I dont know if it will work with linux, or maybe it doesn't matter?

As u can see, I'm a little lost.
Would somebody kindly help me with thier knowledge?
thx

Go to http://www.roaringpenguin.com/pppoe/ they have the info you need to get on with GNU/Linux. And you can install GNU/Linux as long as you have the latest LILO, think they removed the size limitation so it doesn't have to be below whatever it used to be. My mind just went blank.
Have a great day

Oh yea, most of the current distributions will let you install, they will partion the drive for you, you just have to tell it how much you want to use for GNU/Linux. One more thing, if you're unfamiliar with this, please back up all your important data in case you have a fiinger check and hit a wrong key,,, when you say OOOOPS, it's too late.

If you defrag your drive first (to move everything to the inside of the disk) you can use a non-destructive partitioner (Partition Magic or FIPS) to add partitions to the END of the drive that are smaller than the free space in your main partition.
You'll basically want two to start you off.
One 256mb swap partition, and one ~2-5gb root partition.

For the distro:
If you are unfamiliar with unix, then I'd suggest Mandrake. If you know your way around a basic unix system, I'd suggest Debian (which is much easier to manage packages on, but requires a little knowledge of unix to get started).

I don't personally use PPPoE, but I know that it can be done. Try a Google search for "linux PPPoE howto" or something similar to get started.
