pppd problems

Trying to connect to my ISP with pppd, I'm having some problems. It calls the ISP, but then, the ISP does nothing. Regardless if I use PAP or CHAP. Here's a couple lines from the /var/log/syslog file:

chat[459]: expect (CONNECT)
chat[459]: ^M
chat[459]: alarm
chat[459]: Failed

What does "alarm" mean?

What program are you using to connect? kppp gppp wvdial?
