Can anyone advise please: I am using Suse7.3 with kppp for internet browsing. I keep getting the following message:

"The process for the <a domain-name here> protocol unexpectedly died"

It seems to happen with Konqueror and Netscape6/Mozilla as well, and the domain name varies almost at random. After the message I cannot load any more pages, and have to disconnect and reconnect and restart the browser. Sometimes it will happen again, other times the problem has disappeared.

Is this something local to my machine, or possibly an 'internet' problem? What can I do about it? I can't see any error messages in my /var/log/localmessages file.

Hope someone can help with this problem, which is going to end up forcing me back to Windows if I can't get it solved! :(

The ISP-Hookup-HOWTO has a section entitled "The basic configuration" which should have enough information for you to check your configuration for errors. If your configuration is not at fault, I think the next most likely place for the fault is your ISP.

After dialup has been established, check to see what modules are loaded (lsmod) and make a note of them.

When the process dies, again check using lsmod and see if any modules related to your modem etc. are missing from the list.

If so, then it could be the kernel autoloader that scans for what it thinks is unused modules and unloads them which of course causes the disconnection.

I read about this sometime ago.

Thanks.

I read the HOWTO but it doesn't seem to offer much illumination on this point. I shall try the lsmod approach and see what comes of it.

Their's not much point in asking my ISP (ntl) for help. Ntl 'neither supports nor endorses Linux'. Not suporting I can understand, but the last part sticks in my craw a bit. When their steadily increasing subscription price finally rises to near the level of other ISP's I shall be waving them goodbye, I think, and look for someone more supportive :-)

I have now tried connecting using a different ISP (still using kppp, only changing the dial-up number, Username and p/w), and browsing works perfectly. As soon as I go back to my ntl connection the error message starts appearing. Clearly the problem lies neither with the connection scripts nor modules being unloaded. I need to aproach ntl with some information - but can anyone tell me: what specific phenomenon causes this error message to occur? If I know the specific cause I may get somewhere with their tech support. Any kde people out there who can help?

There may be info in /var/log/messages which will help. Also I think KPPP keeps some logs ofits own.
