well first off it detected my sound card (sound blaster awe64 (ISA)) however... in linux i dont hear sound and when i tried playing mp3's it said it couldnt play

I also want to know is it possible to run windows or mac programs in linux? I'm a total linux newbie and i miss my windows programs (but not windows) ;p

1 thing I'm kinda pissed about is neither aol or anything doing with microsoft supports linux in any way so i cant play on the internet gaming zone in linux either (told me i need atleast win 95... blah)

oh ya i installed wine (the windows 3.x emulator) and i dunno where it installed to... lol

thanks for the help with the cable modem setup whoever replied... i got mandrake and got it fixed (atleast now i can go on the net in linux woohoo!!) =)

I cannot help you with the sound card problem. However when using Linux you have to remember, it is obselete. Most programs (even ones in a window) need to be run in the command line. So you need to press the commmand line button in KDE and type in wine followed by the program you want to run. Most likely, wine will give you errorr messages. Which brings us to another solution. There is a program that can be used to run Windows programs at native speeds.

Good news: 10 day free trial at www.netraverse.com (http://www.netraverse.com) (click on win4lin)

Bad news: After that if you want to keep it, $80

So what is your best solution. I don't know. I only recently got linux to work by canceling my current ISP and signing up for a linux compatible one that is $5 less than AOL. This is called Eskimo North (www.eskimo.com.) This has a 2 week free trial. If you do not send them money within those 2 weeks, they cancel your account.

Hi there:

At the command line (Konsole, Terminal, etc.) you'll need to run "sndconfig"
( You will need to be logged in as "root" to do this.)

At the prompt, simply type "sndconfig" ( without the quotes)

Let it try to automatically detect your card.

If it fails to play the test sounds, it will prompt you to try choose the card manually.

Find as close a match as you can for your AWE 64 and select the default port address and IRQ settings. ( They don't tend to vary in configuration from machine to machine much.)
You shouldn't have to even reboot if this action is successful.

When you can hear the test sounds, your newly configured sound card should work well.
