Just performed a fresh install of Suse 7.1 on my desktop. And WHOA what memory leaks.
When I use the KDE control center to view the information on my memory......it is rising FAST.
It starts off only using about 100Meg of my physical memory. But before I know it it is using all 640M. This is killin me.
So I guess my questions are. What command do I use to view what is actually running and how much memory it is using? And how do I kill those processes if I determine I dont want them running?
Anyone else having this problem??
Thanx

*grins*
Sometimes monitors are more trouble than their worth.
Linux will use all available memory, most of the time. period. I've noticed with my box the more I'm *doing* the less likely 'all' my RAM memory is in use.
use top from a command line, try ktop .. dunno about that.. ummmm look for one process using 90%MEM ... look for things that are using 100%cpu
Are you using up swap space or real memory? If your chewing up all your swap space and the machine is clearly slowing to a crawl...then there is a problem. If you are just using up RAM and not swapping anything, I wouldn't worry too much.
And .. one thing, you may have too much ram in there, you must ship me one of those sdram simms immediately for testing ... I MEAN 640 Mb ram...
*grins* JOKING dammit.

Thanx for the tip on the monitoring programs. I think I heard that before but wasn't sure. And you are right. Only the physical memory is being used up. No swap. So my machine is behaving itself. Just a little unnerving to see that monitor.
Hey,.....with the price of memory, why dont you have that much in your system? Check out www.pricewatch.com. (http://www.pricewatch.com.) It is unbelievable how inexpensive memory is these days.
I can still remember seeing 4 megs for 135 dollars and sprinting to the bank for the cash, because I just "knew" prices were never going to be that low again. ;)

Well, I run SuSE 7.1 in an 800mhz machine with 256mb Ram and something like 280mb or 300mb on my swap partition.
I'm running KDE 2.1 and Netscape 4.76 which is known to be a memory hog and from what I can tell here, I am only using fifty one percent of my memory and it's been that way for quite a while now.
You may want and turn off some processes. I know for a fact that SuSE just about turns everything on; on boot up.
Is true what you say about memory prices, I was reading the 'paper this morning and I saw 128mb of RAM retailing for as low as $38.00 dls Check them out at www.ubm.com (http://www.ubm.com)
I'm not quite sure that they do out of state sales, but it can't hurt to check them out, right? :)
NO, I don't work for them.
