I have some off-beat questions about backing up files.
1. Is it posable to backup the key directories, using tar, without closing anything? Can this be done with X running, or best bet would be CLI with all the services stopped? (I will be using CLI anyway, but would be alright to do it in X)

2. Anyone know where Red Hat keeps their kernel tree? I've been tring to install some things but can't find the darned tree...I think I found it, /usr/lib/rep/i386-redhat-linux? Am I way off on this?

You should be ok backing up the files with tar while running X though to be sure, just exit from X first.

The kernel source should reside in /usr/src/linux which will be a symlink from the actual kernel source in /usr/src/linux-#.#.# (#.#.# is the kernel version).

It should, but this is the only directory there...
/usr/src/redhat
with these subs
./BUILD
./RPMS
./SOURCES
./SPECS
./SRPMS
and the only things in those are src.rpms I installed (mainly webfonts), no simlinks, nothing that says 'linux' just junk...

That's where I thought it was also, and why this is a big question to me :D

when you install redhat or drake thats all they give you... download the kernel-source rpm and then you will find you have a /usr/src/linux dir with all sorts of goodies inside ;)

Thanks Morph...you know of any smooth, un-intrusive way of doing this? Just get the kernel-src.rpm and do a rpm --rebuild kernel-src.rpm? Without worring about it wacking my existing kernel?

Of course I should look at updating the kernel...the one I have works fine now 2.4.7-10
