Just for kicks, I thought I'd try out Mandrake 7.2. Very not bad! Highly refined (although a bit bloated) and very cool. First time I ever got vfb to work and have good resolution in the console. Very cool. But I miss apt-get.

Evil Jeff.
Tell me more about vfb and improved console resolutions.
I have been trying to improve console resolutions for months (using a GeForce2 MX). I've tried vga mode(?) and svgatextmode, among other things and I'm not as happy with the console text as I was with my old TNT.
Naturally, X and Quake3 are great, but I do all my IRC, mail reading, editing, etc in consoles and I want them to be SHARP.
Two steps forward, one step backward. Poke around in that MDK 7.2 and clue me in on how it achieves this resolution. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

I'm no expert... but, during the install (expert) it asks you if you want to have vfb compiled into the kernel. I said yes, and after that it asked me what default resolution I wanted for my console. By default, I of course told it not to start x, just so you know it's not at that part of the install. But it comes with links and makes the os so much easier to use without x. VERY cool! But remember that it only asks you this during an expert install, not a custom or newbie install. Custom is what I have normally done with mandrake, or expert (on occasion), it may have given the option in 7.1 but I didn't see it.
But 7.2 seems to be as user friendly as a mac (well, almost) and shiny as hell. I now consider mandrake to have taken the cake in the field of user-friendliness. Red Hat is downgraded to a server os. Mandrake is MUCH more easy to install and configure (NOW) than corel or red hat. It's installer is NEWBIEIZED in the linuxnewbie.org style. And very much improved pcmcia support.
Still missing apt-get,

The amount of "things" that startup on 7.2 scared me so much that I got rid of Drake7.2. Its just too bloated for me.
I love Debian now. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

Turning off startup services is as easy as unchecking boxes for each service in DrakConf, 'Startup Services'.... I don't know how to compare Mandrake to any other because its all I have used so far. But I love it. Install it as 'server' sometime, that is stripped down. Too light for me...

Evil Jeff, I'm gonna compile virtual frame buffer into my kernel tonite when I get home.
Would you mind checking your kernel configuration and letting me know what console fonts are built in to your MDK kernel?
Thanks, bro'!
