Hello everyone, I am trying to install Slackware on my computer. The problem is that I am not that good with the fdisk utility in Slackware. I have created a <swap> partition, and I have created a </> root partiton the problem is that I can not seem to find the Hex code to define a /boot partiton. Do I really need the boot partition?
The reason I ask is because in RedHat 6.1 you would setup a swap, boot, and root partition. this should be the same in Slackware I would think. Am I right, or what?

Having a seperate partition for /boot is always optional. It used to be (im not sure if it still is) that your kernel had to be in the first 1024 cylinders of the hard drive. That is the whole reason that people make it a seperate partition. It only needs to be about 5-10 MB.
Personally, I don't have one, and it works for me this way. You said you used fdisk. Try using cfdisk or another partitioner to get the job done. I don't like plain old fdisk that much (i never took time to learn it)

As jbstew32 said, you really don't need a boot partition, unless you start having problems with the 1024th cylinder.
However, if you decide you absolutely want one, or you need one... the hex code(is it hex? I never paid attention) is the linux native one. Off-hand I'd say it's 83. Anyway, it's the same as your / partition. Any linux partition you make(except for swap) will be linux native.
And like jbstew32 said, you might want to look at cfdisk, it is a bit more user friendly.

Thanks guys. The fdisk in Slackware is hard to use, but I think I have figured it out.

You can also use cfdisk, it's (sudo)graphical, may work better. Any slack questions, you can shoot me an email. ille_pugil42@hotmail.com
