After trying many E-Mail clients I have finally settled on Sylpheed for the time being and here is why:

For clarity -- when I say Groups, I mean address's that are preselected so I can click on a key word and preload all the recipients without having to select each individual every time. Make sense? Lookout can do it and I found a way in Sylpheed, by using the Templates... but none of the other E-Mail clients seems capable of doing this simple feat!

Evolution: Still to buggy to be used reliably. That and the fact that I can't set up contacts or send and recieve mail is another major issue!

K-Mail: Works but the editor is not refined enough for my tastes. That and trying to create mail groups? Well this is an issue I have had with all the clients I have tried so far.

Postoffice: Nice UI, fast start up but again, buggy and unreliable. I never got the chance to try and set up groups.

Sman: Uh, wouldn't even compile in from source, I am not going to screw with it either. It either compiles and works or it doesn't... it didn't so I rm -Rf the SOB!

Liamail: Fast and light but lacks many of the features I am looking for, which really aren't all that complex. Plus the buggy issue rose it's nasty head... again.

Spruce: Hangs on retrieve mail and send mail, so it's another buggy infestation.

Pine: Great for systems that don't have the GUI set-up and for people that like the simple interface, doesn't suit my needs and I like the pretty buttons! Actually I will admit that once you get used to it Pine is nice but... doesn't fit my bill either.

Gtkmail: Same issue as sman, could not compile from source. Again it either works or I **** can it. I am not going to waste time trying to figure out why **** doesn't work. Hmmm this sounds like 90% of the desktop market users out there!!!

**refer to thread about linux failing as a desktop...**

StarOffice: Works fine but for some odd reason it will choke, and I mean the whole friggin' Office Suite!!! Not just the mail feature. So I have stopped using it for mail. That and I still can't figure out how to create groups.

Anyhow, I am using Sylpheed and other than the Composer still needing better edit and auto correct features as well as auto capitalize, it's a fast and easy to set up client. The other issue I have is with signature set up, it doesn't seem to work. I submitted a bug report. Anyhow, it is also a very fast client. I was totally impressed with it's speed! Load times are within 1-2 seconds of clicking the button.

So far out of all the clients except Pine, Sylpheed is the fastes one I have used. There that's my opinion... :D

I like Sylpheed too, but as you haven't mentioned Balsa (http://balsa.gnome.org/) I'll mention it. Have you tried it yet?:

Just curious, what issues have you had with Evolution? I've been using it for about 3 months now and I haven't had any problems at all. I set up contacts just fine, it all works well for me.

Also, you didn't mention Mozilla/Netscape mail. I have Mozilla 0.9.8, and Netscape 6.2.1 and their mail is O.K. too, not sure about your groups issues.

I was using Kmail 2.2.1 and was very satisfied as it had everything I needed until Rogers@home changed their smtp to smtp authentication and that was it for Kmail. Apparently they won't have smtp authentication until version 3.

Then I saw Sylpheed listed on freshmeat.net and noticed it supported smtp auth. So I installed Sylpheed 7.1, liked it and have been upgrading with every version (now 7.3). Filters work fine, multiple accounts and all in all, one fine email client.

I'm very impressed with Sylpheed and it's rate of development is awesome. Bugs reported on the ML are often fixed within the hour and non-bloat features are quickly implemented.

Tried Balsa, not to bad but still no group capability. But then again I just started to use it so I will give another week of testing. A few things I don't like but overall not to bad. Not as fast as Sylpheed though. But this is only a snap review...
