I have extracted and installed numerous progs, usually to /tmp, but always wonder if I should be concerned with in which folder I extract to and install from. Does it matter? Is there a standard everyone uses? If an about-to-be-installed-program is dependant on other programs, will this location make a difference? Is there a "correct" way to approach this? Things I should bear in mind?

Thx

hello,
i always use /tmp to explode my tarballs (boy that sounds funny...) anyway the make files will look for stuff in stanard places and use absolute paths rather than relative ones, so there are no problems doing it like you are. there has not been for me anyway.

I use /var/tmp but that's just because a) I have more space there, b) /tmp gets cleaned after every reboot or I think every week.
