(...in RH, Drake, etc... or are is it a kernel function) ph34r 11-21-2000, 06:07 PM Well, for recent versions of RH, there is server, gnome ws, kde ws, custom and expert. Server installs all sorts of daemon level programs and console apps, but not necessarily X. Gnome/KDE install gui apps and such, as well as the DE - not necessarily a lot of the un-needed daemons. A custom install lets you pick groups of packages, and expert lets you pick individual packages. Derango 11-21-2000, 11:01 PM usualy, the difference between the two install methods is the amount of automation that goes with them. With a normal install, you may only get to pick the general catagory of applications that you will use, or a certain task that you will be using your system for. The installer will then install the appropriate software. Also, when configuring componets, it will try to do as much on its own as possible, without bothering you. An expert install, however is just the opposite. You can normaly choose to install exactly the software you want, and have full power over how your system componets are initaly configured. What each option does realy varries with the distro you choose. ------------------ This space For Rent [This message has been edited by Derango (edited 22 November 2000).] per©oDåN 11-22-2000, 01:06 AM Like custom vs. guided/handheld... *why don't they just say that?* I got scared off on my first install of RH a couple years ago, since I knew I wasn't a guru, but I did know I wanted SAMBA, DNS, and some other ****e... somewhat confusing if you ax me... I just brought it up since I was installing Drake for the first time earlier.
