i'm ready to download star office (Linux, 5.2 english) from www.sun.com, (http://www.sun.com,) and its a *.bin file. the NHF explains installing it with a tar.gz file...
is the the *.bin file correct or is there another place to download the tar.gz file that i'm looking for? thanks.

That's correct. A .bin file is executable. Run it like this: ./filename

Star Office can save documents in ms word compatible format. I can't remember off the top of my head whether it does .doc or .rtf, but you shouldn't have any problems. A word of warning though, if you're planning any complex formatting it may not translate properly. You should be OK with the basic bold, italic etc.

StarOffice is extremely and pleasingly compatible with MS Office 97/2000 files. I've been able to view MS PowerPoint slides and Word documents without any formatting difficulties. However I found StarOffice to be painfully slow, and I'm not the only one. An alternative would be KOffice. I don't know how well it performs. I'm in the process of downloading it right now.

Star Office works great for me, except for slow load time initially and it runs slowly at times. Then again, PIII450 and 64MB ram may help...
