Can't you just press ' CTRL_ALT_F1...F6 ' and get a virtual console screen?

For me CTRL_ALT_BACKSPACE kills the X-server and drops me into the shell. Not sure if it will work with what you got setup, but its worth a try. Or just do like linuxcool suggested.

Your default runlevel is set to init 5.You can edit a file to make the runlevel init 3 as the default. You can also switch runlevels on the fly by opening a terminal window,su into root, and typing init 3 or init 5.
