I'm intending on installing Mandrake 7.2 on my system (downloading it from the Internet) alongside Win 98 and I was wondering if there was a version of LILO that would be able to read past the 1024 cylinder on my 13.6 gig hard drive. If there isn't a version of LILO that is able to handle this, is there another free alternative to a boot manager . . . or is this already covered in Mandrake 7.2? :) Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)

Yup, lilo >=21.3 can handle that. Get it here (ftp://sd.dynhost.com/pub/linux/lilo/) if it's not included in MD.

Instead of using LILO use GRUB. It is the default boot manager for a normal install of MDK7.2.

I think by default Mandrake 7.2 will use the GRUB boot loader which doesn't have a cylinder limit. Anyway the newest versions of LILO aren't limited to booting partitions within a certain limit. I usually use Partition Magics' boot manager to dual boot and just install LILO to the root partion. Another option is to put the /boot partition within the cylinder limit and the other partitions can go where ever.

You should have no problems with Mandrake there kapwfm. I've installed the 7.1 version to the last 5 GB on a 25 Gig disk without problems, so your 7.2 install on a 13.6 Gig disk should be painless :)

this is what you need to put in your lilo.conf file. Someone please correct me because I could be wrong. But this seemed to work for me.

Stu: Thats exactly right. An install of Mandrake 7.2 SHOULD set this up correctly for you, but you never know.

Of course, you could always use a boot floppy...
