is there a way to have GNOME update its menu program items automatically whenever i update the menu items in KDE?
for example if i install staroffice under KDE its menu items wont show up automatically in GNOME.
this would be useful to have all users be able to update their menu items whenever a new app is installed.

I've never heard of anything that would do what you are asking.
Time to put your programming/scripting skills to work. :)
Sure it is possible. Mandrake has a tool called MenuDrake that does just this very thing. In fact, it updates the menus for all installed window managers. Plus, each user can have their own menu tree. Pretty cool.
Debian has the same kind of thing, called Menu, I believe.

Or just use your KDE menus.
Right click on the G icon (menu icon) and select properties. One of the options is to show KDE menus.
