i've heard that VNC is quite slow, just wondering if there were any other suggestions. what i need to do is just access a win2k desktop remotely on my freeBSD machine. nothing big, i'd just like to use MSN messenger and some other things without having to mess with ports. no big resource hogs, all small stuff.
if you think this would be easier with vmware, i'd be more than grateful for any tutorials on the subject.

I don't know of any others besides VNC.
Have you tried it yourself, or did you just hear that it's a little slow? Of course it all depends on the speed of your network. The VNC site also has suggestions to speed things up.

speed is relative :) but anyways speaking from experience i find its actually pretty fast. 2 main factors to consider
1) how fast is the pipe your using to access the server?
2) how big is the desktop your trying to view (eg: 800x600@24bits or 640x480@8bits
of course if your smart you loop vnc through ssh and turn on ssh compression
