I have converted my girlfriend to linux at last!! She has Mandrake 8.0 dual booted with Windows ME on her laptop but as she dislikes Windows is willing to ditch it if she can find a money/personal finance package similar to MS Money that lets you specify catagories like food, social, booze etc. I have searched davecentral.com and many other websites and found many packages but none that support reporting against catagories apart from Moneydance which is a commercial application. Can anyone suggest a suitable package that is not commercial?
Many Thanks

Had a look at gnucash? It should be part of the distro. Otherwise check http://www.gnucash.org

Yes, gnucash is the only alternative to Quicken I have found.
However, I'm an accountant and would consider myself a power user of Quicken and found gnucash just too lacking in various features beyond just entering checkbook entries for my purposes.
I gave up on moving that function over to Linux for the time being. If you are a barebones user of Quicken then gnucash will be a decent substitute.

Have you used the 1.6.x? It is much more featureful than previous versions. Of course, even www.gnucahs.org (http://www.gnucahs.org) advises upgrading your distro to get it than trying to install it yourself, but it does come as a part of MDK 8.1.
You other option is kapital from www.thekompany.org (http://www.thekompany.org)
It is suppose to be pretty good, but costs money. The trial worked ok, butfor my meager uses, I couldn't see paying for it.

I had never heard of that program before. I see they have a demo, so I'm going to check it out over the weekend. I see it has a budget module which is one of the items I use. It doesn't appear to have the tax estimator, and I'm not sure how well it will handle non-cash accounts. My current balance sheet consists of approx. 40 accounts in Quicken. But if it works well I would be willing to pay the $40 for the full version.
