Please help...

I am a (very) new Newbie, and am having problems with XDM.

Currently, my system boots straight into X, bypassing the terminal. Similarly, when I shut down, I get back to the login prompt provided by XDM.

I would prefer to boot to the terminal rather than X, and do not want X to restart when I shut it down.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

No problem -- it's actually not xdm that's taking care of this.

1. Find the file inittab in /etc
2. Do 'vi inittab' or 'emacs inittab' or otherwise open it to edit it.
3. In there, there should be a line that says something like: 'id:5:initdefault'.
4. Change the '5' to a '3' and save.
5. Upon reboot, you should stay in console.

Note that these directions apply to redhat-type distributions, but the number is the important thing. All distros have inittab.

Thanks for the reponse Pyro.

Unfortunately I have already tried this, but it made no difference. In case it's relevant, I'm running Debian 2.2.

Cheers
