FreeBSD has an entirely different boot concept than most Linux distros (except maybe Slack). All the BSD's are supposed to be more secure and robust than Linux distros also. Also, BSD's are Unix variants, whereas Linux is more of a clone (GNU means Gnu's Not Unix)

HURD. Oh wait it isn't an OS war... Linux is better at certain things (dekstop things mainly) and FreeBSD rulez the servers (though Linux is catching up)

I'll just repost what I said in another thread.

Cosmetically, there's very little difference. Knowing your way around a Linux system will greatly help you get around a BSD system, and vice-versa. But, under the hood, the difference is night and day. It's not easy to explain without getting into great detail, and there are already plenty of websites with docs like that out there.
