I downloaded the whole WP beast. From terminal I unzipped, did the tar thing, and ran the ./Runme. All went okay. Answered a couple of questions finally it came up with installation finished, and then it ask me what directory to place it in. It was a sudden death type question. I answered apparently wrong; it gave me a nasty response and went back to the root prompt.

Question’s are: did it install, where did it install, and how do I link it to Gnome panel or desktop? Or do I have to start from the ./Runme command again and answer that last vexing question? I have been double clicking in /usr/bin for the last couple of days. When the vexing question appeared I in what directory to place it in I should have chosen this /usr/bin, huh?

Can you remember exactly what the nasty response was?

Chances are, it really didn't install properly. If it did, it usually install itself in the /opt directory, but not all the time.

Nothing installed under /opt.

It will not redo it. I just tried the ./Runme again and the message read "error: nothing new to install".

I can't really remember what it said exactly. It came up saying installation completed (or finished). Then it mentioned "what directory to install in".

Hi,

Look under /usr/bin/ (I run Mandrake so that's where the application executables are stored. Look for something like wp8 or what ever version you downloaded.

To create a link to it on your desktop, If on KDE desktop you need to create this in a temp folder and then drag it onto the desktop.

If in Gnome or KDE, you will have to generalize this info, it may not match exactly..Right click from within the temp folder, you will see a menu for 'NEW' then choose 'Application'. You will get a dialog box something like application.link or something like that (your running Gnome so I don't know what it's called in there) just replace the "application" with "WordPerfect" leaving the link extention alone. Then hit OK and then you will get the 'Properties' dialog. Usually it is about 4 tabs to go over and fill out.

First is your General information tab, telling you a little info on the new application (like the name you just gave it)

Second tab should show you an icon choice,(if I remember how Gnome has it set up) click on the icon box and choose the icon (hopefully WP placed it's own in there, so you can choose that one.

Third tab is for the execution, should be a browse button, browse over to the /usr/bin and hilite the wp8 (or whatever) executable and then OK.

Fourth tab will supply permissions, make sure the perrmissions are set to allow users to access it and then I think that the bottom area on the last tab will allow you to select the files that WP will open >text/rtf, text/wdp (which you might have to create in your "global mimetypes" section your self, which I find stupid that the programs are not written to automatically create these for us, had to do that with <image/bmp> I run KDE and it doesn't create the bmp mime for users, I know that Gnome does, pain in the you - know - what)

When you are finished, just hit OK and get out of there, drag the newly created link onto the desktop and test it, if it doesn't work then right click and look over the properties tabs again to see if you need to tweak or change anything.

Don't forget to copy the new link over to your home directory set up for 'user', if you do all this in root then boot into 'user' mode you will not be able to access the link, but making sure your permissions are checked for 'users' to read AND write and then coping it over into the:

/home/yourusernamehere/Desktop folder

will assure that you will now have access to that application from that link.

Like I said, I run KDE, not Gnome, too many crash reports to do. So the tabs are from memory, but I think you can figure it out.

Good Luck to you.

Mandrake 7.2 almost here, yea!!!

Richard : )~

Okay, I see I'm not the only dope out there. Go take a look at the Corel newsgroup, lol!

Thank you folks for filling me in, and all you have mentioned will be put to good use.

Now all I have to do is figure out how to get it all removed and re-install it the right way.

Thanks again!

Mine is installed in /usr/X11R6/wpbin and the executable is 'xwp' for the full path of '/usr/X11R6/wpbin/xwp'.

Do a search for 'xwp'.

My copy of WP told me to make a directory for it to install to. So I made /usr/wpbin and it all went there. Search for wpbin and it will show up.
