telnet help needed

I'm trying to telnet my linux box running Mandrake 7.1 Evrything seem kosh to me but when i attempt it acts like it connects for a second and then says 'connection lost'..It also does this when I telnet localhost. I've edited my hosts.allow to accept all for now but still no go. Can anyone give me some ideas .. Thanks!

is telnet allowed in the inetd.conf?

Do you have a Firewall? If so you may need to set ipchains to accept telnet...also, have you restarted inetd since you uncommented the inetd.conf?

I do have a firewall I set up through linuxconf.. I'm really new to this .. Where can I allow telnet through it? Thanks much!!
