unable to open display"" is the line that comes after "xhost +" and after startx -- -bpp24 devian gives me "X11TransSocketUNIXConnect: Can't connect: errno = 111 giving up.

Could be a variety of things, check your configuration.
What version of XFree are you using?

1) you cannot lauch X from a su to root -- the display id will not be correctly assigned.
2) Your XF86Config file must contain a reference to at least one display
3) depending on the version of X you are running there are a number of files to check.
