Hi all, got my DSL working this evening with the Roaring Penguin software. Was able to connect to the net and fly... Booted back into windows for a while and when I came back into Linux could not get my connection going again. I have a dynamic I.P. setup. Would this be the trouble. Running Mandrake 7.1. Ran ifconfig eth0 and it did not recognize my card although before booting back into windows the first time it did recognize the card. Would appreciate any and all help.

I have been running roaring penguin for a while now and I love it. I suggest that you re-run the config for rp-pppoe ("adsl-setup" is the command if I remember it right). However, before doing it, make sure you don't have any settings on your network card (DNS, IP etc) which will be set up durring the config for pppoe. Also, remember that "adsl-status" will check if it is connected right, and "adsl-start" and "adsl-stop" will bring it up and down. One other note, I use mandrake 7.1 which comes with a GUI configuration for rp-pppoe which I personally never was able to get to work. If you have it, I would avoid using and stick with the directions given by roaring penguin. Let me know if any of this helps.

just one more note for you. I use two networks cards. my eth1 is used by rp-pppoe and it does NOT show up durring boot (only eth0 does, which connects to my network) and under my mandrake network setup program (under drake config) there is no information about eth1 (I do not have it enabled). I think that rp-pppoe take care of all of that stuff, which is why you have to tell it your DNS severs durring its config, but I do know that it works great. hope that helps you some. good luck

That sounds good but will I have to go through the configuration every time I boot into Linux? Also, since it's not recognizing my NIC for the umpteenth time will it do so just by setting up rp-pppoe?

thanks for you help, I'll give it a shot.

if you set the adapter up in rp-pppoe, it should ativate it itself (at least that is what happens in my set up). The config files for rp-pppoe should only need to be set up once, they are then stored for later use. I have rp-pppoe start up every time a boot up, so I never have to do anything to connect. Also, the rp-pppoe has a configuration for a firewall and I suggest you use it. Let me know how it goes.

Well after much frustration still a no go. I can't believe it won't come up again. I was beautiful for about 5 min. yesterday before I had to boot back into Winblows. Anyway when I run adsl-start it takes a while and says "Timed Out". When I run adsl-status it comes back with "Link is down - could not find interface corresponding to pppd pid xxxxx. When I run ifconfig eth0 it says "device not found". HELP!!!!!! http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/confused.gif

have you tried re-runing "adsl-setup"? Also, what version of rp-pppoe are you using. I know mandrake comes with an older version, which has some config files that are incompatible with newer versions of rp-pppoe

I downloaded the latest version of rp-pppoe from the rp website. I've rerun adsl-setup several times and still no luck. The one thing that continues to make me wonder is my NIC. In windows it says that it's using IRQ 11 which my AGP graphics card says it's using as well. During Linux boot up I get a "failed" message when it comes to the eth0. I then go into linconfig and change the IRQ to 10 but still get no results when running ifconfig eth0.

If you have two network cards, you'll need to tell LILO that you have two. It'll, by default, only use one. I'm sorry, but I can't remember the exact append='' line, but you could easily find it going through the NHF's or using the search function of this forum.

What are you talking about?
i've had 4 NIC's installed in my computer and never had to touch lilo.

if ANYTHING is on the same IRQ (Video is usually 11) as the Video card, you'll run into problems.

change your BIOS PCI/IRQ settings. i cant remember what specifics, but you'll get it off IRQ 11

O.K. I checked in windows and my AGP video card is on the same IRQ as my 3com NIC. They both reside on IRQ 11. I booted and went into the BIOS but my only choice when it comes to IRQ settings is "available/reserved". How can I use this to help or should I go into the windows device manager and do something there? I may finally be getting somewhere. Thanks

Update: went into windows device manager and it will not let me change the IRQ setting.

Try disabling PNP in bios.

It says "PNP OS" NO in the Bios so I'm assuming it's already disabled. While I was in the BIOS I "reserved" IRQ 11 and then rebooted. After reboot went into device manager and the video card and NIC are now sharing IRQ 10. I'm at my wits end with this thing. I might have to change my screen name to "hatinlinux" http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif Keep sending suggestions folks. thanks.....

*grins*

Byfar the best option in the bios at this point is 'assign IRQ for AGP' set to NO/disable. This is a point I've made time and again .. 85% of the mobos out there assign the same IRQ to the AGP video AND the first PCI slot. Point two .. move the card if turning off the agp irq is not an option.
In reality windows is screwing up your nic. It accepts and sets the bios assigned shared IRQ. Linux doesn't much like this behaviour.

thanks for the tip Lorithar. I'll give one/both a try. Hopefully then I'll respond via Linux!

Well, many HUGE thanx to lorithar for the suggestion. Moved my NIC to a new slot and cleared up the IRQ conflict. Booted into linux and fiddled around a bit and I was up and running. Want to know if I can automate some processes. Each time I want to connect I have to:

insmod 3c90x

to get the module working... Then I have to open a shell and type adsl-start to get the connection up through rp-pppoe.

Can I add some instructions to automate this??

Thanx Again!!!
