For three days I have been trying to deal with Mandrake 7.1 and configuring my cable modem. I don't have a static ip address.
In the networkconf, 1. What goes in the Hostname + domain? 2. What goes in Primary name and domain? 3. What goes in Search of Name server? When I check the winip config the only name I get is DEFAULT for host name and that doesn't work. Please Help. I have the DNS,netmask, gateway and IP address.
Have you tried setting it up for dhcp?

Hi:
Assuming you have configured your NIC correctly.....
In hostname and domain, put in yourisp.com
For example, if you have roadrunner, you'd enter: nyc.rr.com (or whatever it is in your area.)
In netconf, be certain to enable dhcp (also be sure you have installed it.)
device will be eth0
module will be whatever your NIC uses (for example, ne2k-pci if that is the module your card requires.
You don't need to bother with the rest--dhcp will send a request to the isp's DHCP server, which will then assign all of that.
A note: if you have @home, you do need to pass the hostname--do a search at this site, the subject has come up many times.
Good Luck.

If the machine is dual boot with win/95, use the info from winipcfg to help. I used the name of the machine as it saw it there and let dhcp do the rest. All other methods failed for days, but like you, I'm not a linux pro.
