Hello!

I'm about to install Mandrake 8 using the two ISO's downloaded from the site.

I hear M8 has a built in firewall, is there an easy way to configure it, like ZoneAlarm for windows.

If the configuration is a little more complicated, could you please point me to a guide or give me tips on how to configure it.

Please bear in mind, I'm an outrageously new-newbie!
So toned down technical-talk would be appreciated!

I've never seen 8, but if its like mdk7.2, then you can actually set the "security settigs" from none to paranoid. As far as firewall specifics are concerned, I'm not sure.

I am using drake 8, the firewall it comes with is pretty simple, not sure how secure it is...I have had my cable modem and drake/windows running for about 6 months and never had any issues with it. There is a site that you can go to to have tesat ran on your system, I can't remember the addy to it, but if you ask, I am sure someone has it on here, I have seen post about it.
my tip to you.....don't have anything on your system you don't want to have seen by others. If you are worried about DOC.'s or bank statements, I suggest getting PGP <pretty good privacy> and encrypt the DIR the vital info is held on. I am prett sure PGP is avl. for linux

Thanks,

cypunk06, did you modify any security settings yourself?
After a week or so of installing M8, my PC was hacked into... so I guess I have to change the setting somewhere to increase security. Can you remember changing anything?

/I think the site your thinking of is: www.grc.com (http://www.grc.com)

actually, I was running drake 7.2, without ANY firewall settings other than stock <if they add one on install> about 1 month ago, I installed drake 8, then went under Control center/security/firewalling and played with that....I stayed with the sugg. options.
How do you know you were hacked? Honestly, MOST hackers don't scan for LINUX home users, USUALLY it's windows infected with Back orifice or something equal <which are NOT hackers, but teenage punks with "hacker toys"> MOST R E A L hackers go for major systems just to see if they can do it, and then when they DO crack it....leave it alone. I was just wondering what gave you the idea you were hacked, what they did and so on, 95% of the time it's some kid with a "hacker tool" and any anti viri SW will and can fix it.
