This was kind of wierd, last night I went to install the rpm I downloaded from VMware. It told me that there was already a version of VMware workstation installed. I tried to configure that one, but it wouldn't start. I ran the vmware-uninstall.pl script, then tried to run the rpm again. Same problem. I tried the tar.gz file next(I downloaded both just in case). I got it installed and I ran the vmware-configure.pl script. I wanted it to configure my networking for me, but it told me that there was already a SAMBA on the system. I let the script set up my subnet anyway, without editing smb.conf. Crap, now I forget the error I was getting, but it wouldn't load again. I rebooted my machine, which didn't unmount the file systems, it just hung there (wierd). So when I rebooted manually and let fsck di its thing, I logged in and tried vmware for the hell of ot and it started.... go figure, I"m not sure what happened, but its working. Anyway, my question is this, and I have searched around...

I read the support web for VMware and was trying to use a raw disk to boot my existing windows stuff, but in the configuration editor, raw disk is not one of the options I can select as device type. And also, how do I know which IDE to use, does it matter? I've got 2 HD's, one is PM, other SM. I really need to use the raw disk because I don't have enough room in my /home to put a big enough virtual disk.

I guess thats enough for now...
TIA

Mike

I'm also planning to use raw disk access in VMWare although I haven't had the time to get it going. I have reinstalled Win98 in it's own partition and also reinstalled Linux and VMWare. This is being done on one of my work pc's and when I get the time to try it, I probably would have more knowledge to help you with yours.

PM (Primary Master) would be the one to use. Have you followed ALL the raw disk documentation at VMWare? They do have a few articles on this. Sorry I couldn't help more.

You can actually d/l a large pdf that has all their support documentation in one file.

I think I found the problem, I have VMware Express... and that doesn't support Raw Disk... which I guess would be a great exapmle of why I should have done more research before buying...damn. I guess I'll have to install win98 again.

Thanks for your reply

Your welcome.

Have you tried contacting VMWare's support? I had to on a couple of occasions last year (actually about raw disk) and they were quite responsive to my questions. Since then, the raw disk documentation has improved dramatically.

I have VMware Express... and that doesn't support Raw Disk

Hate to say this as you should have tried the trial product first to see if it meets your needs. Would they allow you a upgrade to the full version?
