i have mandrake 7.2, but i was wanting to see some new stuff, so i was considering compiling a new kernel (2.4 test10) if possible.
but i was also told that 2.4 would be out before the end of the year. should i just wait? or are there SO MANY new features that i should update it?
Unless you know that a specific bug affects you, why wait?
I'm running 2.4.0-test10 (just compiled) and is as stable as any 2.2 kernel I've used but I love the USB/V4L support.
There's no need to wait, if you want the features of 2.4 then get it!

what is V4L and how much USB support is there?

I used the option in 7.2 to install the 2.4 kernel, and it doesn't get very far. It seems like it may be related to me using the reiserfs, but I'm not sure. Just install the 2.4 hack kernel RPM on your 7.2 CD and try it(keep 2.2!).

hey all, I'm lookin to download a iso of Drake 7.2 so first of all, does anyone think the mirrors will slow down (or better yet know of a mirror that is pretty good?)
second, I'm pondering various ponderings... I'm just getting back into linux (put it on the back burner after I couldn't get @home to work with it http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/frown.gif ) and I'm wondering... should I skip Drake 7.2 this weekend and just wait for a Drake distro with kernel 2.4?
or..... (keeping in mind I'm a newbie in a major way) can I get Drake 7.2 and recompile the kernel to 2.4? or is there something about Drake 7.2 that would be incompatible with kernel 2.4 http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/confused.gif ? specifically I'd like to run KDE2 (with Konq, Koffice, etc, etc) and still be able to fiddle around with the CLI as time (and school http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/rolleyes.gif ) permits...
whatta you guys think?

I was using redhat 6.2 ..
i just installed drak 7.2 today.. twice.
the first time, something happened and it didn't startup correctly.
but the second time around was perfect. There's alot of stuff that i still have to un-rpm that i don't want but kde2 is way awesome. my sound card (although unsupported in the kernel) is supported in the included alsa drivers that drake provides.
The only thing i don't like is the package naming convention. the .mdk.rpm thing. new packages keep complaining of dependencies.
and also the single click-open file thing.

I don't think packages should complain because of the mdk.rpm thing. That is actually becoming a convention. If you use Helixcode, they are helix.rpm. RPM dependencies actually look at the RPM database info(you could rename the RPM and it wouldn't really matter).

Yes, the 2.4.testX kernels have been rock solid on my hardware, but this is really generic stuff, too. I haven't compiled after test7. I wanted LVM and seperate windows for the hard drives in gkrellm, and that works. LVM just rocks! Maybe 4 months experience with it, not a glitch, and I import and export it once a month. Painlessly.
