I just received word today at work that I was going to begin testing phases of running Linux. I am the most experienced with using it, so I was designated as the guinea-pig. We are running Novell 5.1 and Windows 2000 Server on all of our servers. My superior wanted me to start with getting more familiar with Linux in general and hopefully we'd move to putting it on the servers as well as the workstation computers for the IS department.

She wanted some information on whether the Novell Client login we use now is supported on any or all Linux distros. I have multiple servers mapped through our login that I need to use on a daily basis and if I can't get logged into the servers it would be pointless to even try. Can I find a distro that would let me use the Novell login? If so, is there more than one that I could choose from? From what I've read at Novell, it appears that it should work with any distro with a kernel above 2.2 but I was hoping to find someone with actual experience.

There is a set of tools that allow Novell client functionality - forget the name at the moment... umm...

Anyway, any distro should have it, and if not, it should be easy to add.

If you are looking for a novell friendly distro caldera has alway been on the leading edge of novell intigration. One of their top guys (I think CEO but don't quote me on that) came from novel. if you buy a boxed version of caldera it should have all the info on how to connect to novel or at least you could call their support and find out.

I use eDesktop 2.4 at the office mostly for the Netware connectivity among all the other reasons. Comes with IPX, Netware Client and Utilities and more.

Check out Caldera's docs http://www.calderasystems.com/support/docs/netware
