Whats the deal with Star Office 6.0? Is it free software or not? I know it is available for download to the Silver Group of Mandrake Linux users but can it be shared? If so, can someone please send me a copy or let me download it from them? I'd like to take a look at it? Thanks.

From what I understand, Sun is going to start charging for StarOffice 6. There is an OpenSource free version of it available that lots of my cronies and I use. Go to www.openoffice.org. (http://www.openoffice.org.) OpenOffice is the free version. It serves my needs well.

Dude,

I feel like I'm in the fourth grade again and some high-schooler gave me crack for free once and is now beginning to charge for it.

Whats the deal with SUN giving it away for free. Then giving it to Mandrake for free. And then charging for it?

All I've heard is that Sun will start charging for their Office Suite.

Go with OpenOffice. I installed it last week and am quite pleased with it so far.

Sun Micro will charge for Staroffice 6.0? I thought it is still free. We'll see it this month.

The free version of StarOffice 6 that was available from Sun, was a beta version -- with an expiration date. Sun released a patch that would allow the beta version to run through June 3rd, then die. They may have given Mandrake a deal on a non-beta version, but I couldn't tell you for certain.

Their plan is to sell StarOffice (for a LOT less than MS Office, but with most of MS Office's functionality) and also develop, give away, and support the suite available through OpenOffice.org.

While very similar in functionality to StarOffice, the OpenOffice.org offering is not simply an open source clone. There are differences, which are addressed at the openoffice.org web site.

I seem to remember that StarOffice moved like molasses, so why would you want to use it anyway. You can get all of the same functionality with other programs that usually come packaged with the OS

That was in the older 5.2 version.

The 6.0 beta I used was incredibly fast.

As far as Mandrake goes - they offered a deal to give it to paying members of the Mandrake Club.
