I have apt-get update and apt-get dist-upgrade on two computers today and afterwards I cannot log into either. I enter a username and there is a pause then it says login incorrect.
Is this a problem with the unstable tree? I hope it is fixed soon if it is.

libpam is broken in unstable. As of last night there were fixed packages at http://incoming.debian.org
If you don't have a root login(I happend to because I noticed this right away) then you'll need to boot into single user mode and update the packages from there.

Thanks a lot! I'm just glad it isn't only me having the problem.

FYI, I've found a good place to go when a your system is hosed because of a bad upgrade is #debian on irc.openprojects.net. Most of the time there is something in the topic or the news(/msg apt news). This can get you an immediate response and they usually already have a fix. Of course, going here and checking for problems before upgrading would be a better idea, but I'm usually too lazy.

EDIT: Wrong IRC server

Well I get to it from openprojects. I assume it's the same room?
