I recently downloaded Suse 7.2. I followed the instructions on writing an image to disk using rawrite; however, nothing seems to be working. How in the heck do I install this OS?? Here are the steps that I followed.
1. Downloaded from SUSE FTP.
2. Using rawrite, attempted to create image of kernel. I only copied k_dflt.rpm to floppy.
3. Using rawrite, attempted to create image of root.
4. Using FIPS, I successfully partitioned my HD.
5. Rebooted system trying each floppy to no avail.
6. Cursed out the computer and left to do some yardwork.
Please help. I obviously don't know what I am doing and some help would be appreciate (big time). Thanks.

So you have burned the iso to cd and am now attempting to create the install diskette?
Is your cdrom not bootable. It would be easier if it was.
I've never use SuSE, but I would imagine there is a dosutil (or similiar) directory on the cd that contains not only rawrite and the floppy images, but a README that explains exactly how to create the necessary diskettes.
k_dflt.rpm will not work with rawrite. It should be a file such as install.img.

I did not see an img file and I cannot burn CDs. My CD-ROM drive is bootable, though. I guess that I have to find a CD. I do have a cable modem, so would I be able to install via FTP? I have looked at the instructions, but they do not seem to be specific enough to guide me through the process.

So you don't have a cdwriter...
I've never tried a ftp install or downloaded the iso image to my hardrive and install from there.
There is a FAQ here on installing from iso. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/cgi-bin/faq/faqw.py?req=all#6.11
And also a NHF on doing a ftp install. Also you can check the distros ftp servers for a diskette image that you can use for a ftp install that's specific to their distro.
I would really suggest you either purchase a retail package or order the cd's from one of the online sites that have them available. Lots of them around though I cannot think of any right now. I usually buy retail to show my support.

I'll try those out. Thanks for the advice. I don't mind purchasing a copy or paying a nominal fee, but I was hoping to check it out first to get an idea of what I am getting myself into. Thanks again.

Your welcome.
We are here to try to help. Sometimes we can and sometimes some of us (ME) do not know how to accomplish certain things such as installing via FTP.
There are lots of resources out there that may help. Just takes a bit of searching.
With the minimal cost that some of these sites charge for a couple of cd's, there's no reason not to purchase a set of i.e. Mandrake 8.0 cd's.
Anything else we can do to help, let us know.
