*throws a temper tantrum*
anyone know any good browser that doesn't crash especially when trying to view this site or other heavily graphic oriented sites? anyone out there use Opera? how is that as a browser?
right now I am using Netscape only because it came with the distro(red hat 7.1) and it's being a pain in my butt!!!!! I usually end up using Lynx because netscape decides it doesn't want to work anymore. Lynx is good don't get me wrong but sometimes I like to see graphics! so anyone with some knowledge of browsers let me know. Pleaseeeeee!!!!

I am currently using Opera for linux on a redhat 7.1 workstation. I find that Opera is fast and convienent. It rarely has trouble with webpages. :)

Go for Konqueror (www.konqueror.org). It doesn't really understand CSS 2, but who uses that anyway?
A good JRE for it is located at blackdown.org. Use the 1.3.3 JRE.

Netscape does bite the big one .. so sad too. I have used Konqueror, it appears to be okay. I by default run Opera now though, and am VERY pleased with it. The only thing it lacks (as does Konqueror) is full on Java. Sometimes it works.. sometimes it doesn't (not being an web head ..I do not know exactly why that is). I have to commit the mortal sin by saying IE is still the best browser out there, and the closest you will find on Linux is Opera IMNTHO

I've gained tremendous respect for Opera 5.x for Linux. I have found it to be a consistently stable and fast web browser. With it's newest release, a reasonable degree of java support and Flash support have been introduced.
I've recently installed the newest Milestone build of Mozilla - 0.9.3 - and have found it to be an improvement over Netscape. I have noticed, however, that once a java applet has been initialized, the memory consumed by vm java (virtual machine) doesn't get released after the applet has been unloaded. At least that's how it's behaving on my Mandrake 8 system. Build 0.9.3 does display content and render more nearly correctly than any previous version of Mozilla or Netscape - these are my findings.

well I am trying opera out as right now.. it seems to be okay but what's with the ad at the top??? it seems to work all right but I'll have to test it my way and see if it can stand my way of doing things.

Opera is not free hence the reason for the ad banner.
If you like it and would like to get rid of the banner, then you can register your copy for whatever $$$ is costs. I guess they would send you a registration code.

Well *sigh* Opera is not free, it is banner driven (banner-ware or buy the registration). I could be okay with buying Opera ($40) if it were fully up to snuff, but since it does still have some kinks, i run the banner version myself. I hear there is a new version 5.05 i will have to see if it is a final release (to my knowledge Opera has yet to have a final release at all for Linux). i have actually become quite used to the banners, and don't even think about them, i just wish they didn't take up the real estate they do.

Opera is good... I liked Konqueror in the 2.2.x release, too.

I just started to use Konqueror recently when I upgraded my distro that came with KDE 2.1. I've now upgraded to KDE 2.2 and Konqueror is even better. Love the fonts as they look better than any MS browser I've seen.

I feel like I am missing a whole world using gnome instead of kde.. then again I do like gnome..

They both have their good points.
I started with KDE 1.1.2 and though I installed Helix Gnome on my previous version of Caldera that I use and tried it for a while, I'm very pleased with KDE 2.2 and do plan to stick with it.
Everyone has their own opinion on what distro and desktop to use. I just use what I like.
I finally tried Opera last week and was surprised that no installation was necessary. Just unpack and run the 'runme'. Very nice browser.
I've also used Netscape 4.7 for around a year on eDesktop 2.4 and never once had a problem with it. Always fast and never crashed.

well opera isn't bad.. it is fast and it hasn't crashed on me.. I need to get used to it though.. I'll probably still use netscape but I'll opera for the graphic/java/cgi oriented pages..
I never actually used kde which I should give it a try. when I first installed linux I just chose gnome because I liked the sound of it and it is working well for me.
maybe someday I'll install the kde and konqueror and try them out on a test run.. but for right now I am happy with what I got.

I find galeon to be the best of those I've tried, including netscape, mozilla, and opera. Haven't tried Konqueror because I am a GNOME kind of guy :)

If you use webwasher ( www.webwasher.com (http://www.webwasher.com) ) it removes pretty much all ads, incuding the ones in the Opera window. You don't get the space back, but you don't see any ads.

hrmm now that is interesting.. maybe I'll have to try it.. thanks
Opera, Opera, Opera, and i can't stress this enough.. OPERA!!
Opera is the one and only peice of software i *gladly* handed over 40 of my hard earned dollars for. i was, and still am, blown away by it's speed, excellent rendering of web pages, many features, and stability.
If IE weren't bundled with that 'thing that they call an operating system,' more people would know there were other great browsers out there, and i garuntee Opera would have a bigger peice of the market share.
