Just wondering how everyone here sets up their partition tables. What size hard drives do you have? How many partitions? How big? Share your deepest feelings.

I have a large / and a 1gb /home, plus a extra ext2 as /storage for downloads and such.

Got enough storage on that rig?
147GB to Win2K? It's not fair!! (though it probably needs that much, hehe ... http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif)

I'm glad you asked...now, tell me:

Why isn't it acceptable to JUST have ONE partition?

(Considering Linux only)

What reasons would a person have for multiple partitions? Is there any rules-of-thumb about this?

Strike, i wish i had that much http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif...hehehe
Actually that's not true, df misreported the ntfs partition size in this case, maybe that's a bug?

Win2000 uses the same amount of space as root (18gb),i might scratch it soon though...in favor of lfs i'll make or daemon might move there soon http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif.

The advantage of multiple partitions is that you can re-install and not format /usr/local and /home. I don't lose downloaded stuff and notes and such when I fubar my system and can't figure out how to un-fry it.

Try that in Windows!

/usr 4.3
swap 98megs

as for thw question What reasons would a person have for multiple partitions? Is there any rules-of-thumb about this?
i once had /home and / as 1 partition. I accidently deleted something in /home and wanted to mount read-only, give me a chance to save it, but since it was part of / i couldn't and i never recovered what i deleted http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/frown.gif

I like that idea...!!!

Here'a something you'll like:

I keep one 234M HD loaded with WIndows98 .cab's/install just for this purpose.

And, if I'm not mistaken (???) we can fdisk a drive into 2 partitions for something like this...

I learned a long time ago to keep .cab's on disk for emergencies. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

Thanks for the tip though.

Note that those /dev/test drives are built using LVM. They are not "real" but can be resized and remounted on the fly.
