I'm trying to install XFree 4.0.1 from an RPM, but I get an error saying RPm's with major versions >3 aren't supported. Weird.
Anyway, I found an RPM for a version 4 of RPM, But I obviously can't load that because my RPM won't support version 4!
Catch 22 and completely stuck.
P.S. I need 4.0.1 for a Hercules Prophet 2 GTS video card (nvidia GeForce 2).

Try downloading and upgrading to the latest version of rpm.

I had the exact same problem. I think the only way around it is to download the source for the new version of RPM and compile it and install it. Then you could install the new RPMs.
Also try getting the Xfree RPMs not from a Redhat 7.0 mirror. If you can get them from a Redhat 6.x then they will work with your current version.

AND, after the upgrade do rpm --rebuilddb else you got an awful mess.

I have gone through this myself. There seem to be a lot of conflicts with the dependencies and the RPM 4.x breaks things like helix, etc. I'm now running pinstripe (RH7.0 beta) and it helped some, but it's buggy as hell and can't compile for crap. They used a snapshot gcc version, which isn't ready for prime time and kind of pissed off the GNU people.
Not going to bother with the "stable" 7.0 as it is supposedly not much, if any, better. After 2 1/2 years of running RPM based systems (SuSE first 1 1/2 yrs.), I'm ready to switch to Debian. The apt-get command sounds really good to me. Now if I can only get DSL so I can snag it...
