mkinitrd problem

When trying this after compiling the changes to the kernel I get the following error when trying to run:

/sbin/mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.2.17.img 2.2.17

It gives the following error. I tried to set the loopback block device when configuring the kernel, but I am not sure that is it.

mount: the kernel doen not recognize /dev/loop0 as a block device (maybe 'insmod driver'?)
Can't get a loopback device

Can anybody help?
