since I paid 4 it already (4 school, not because I wanted 2 !!!), I would really like to use Office under Linux.. !!

You should I've heard. Never tried myself though. Have you checked the documentation at www.winehq.org (http://www.winehq.org) ?

Why?

It almost works at times under wine but it's still horribly unstable - for that true windows feeling.

No seriously why would you run it under linux? Just use it under windows. Is it that painful to reboot? I don't understand why you'd take a program that you paid for and make it work worse just because you want it to work under linux. I want everything to work under linux but if it doesn't then why not use it where it DOES work? Or use a linux program instead? I understand the need to have a linux only machine but if you don't have the tools you need yet then why do a half assed job? If I can't watch DVD movies on linux using my TV out then I will reboot and use windows, till someone writes a better app for linux. Use the right tool for the right job.

Or D/L StarOffice 5.2 and use that.

I believe you can read Office files and save your StarOffice files in Office format.

It's about 92 MB, tho. If you have a fast connection it might be worth the trouble.

It installs really easily, even for a newbie like myself! http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

StarOffice works great with MSOffice files it can read them and save them to be compatible. Maximum Linux had it on the CD a couple of issues ago.

You could try OpenOffice. It should also work fine with MS Office files because it's based on StarOffice's code.

I have tried OpenOffice, and I liked it, but it doesn't handle M$ word' tables all that well.. and since my teachers insist on using MS products (BAH !!) I have to use it to.

Why should I reboot, just to use Word !! How do U expect me to LEARN some linux, without using it ???

I have to run windows when in school anyway, since sysadm. has install a MS Proxy proggie which requires the installation of a client program (which runs only on windoze).

I just figured that getting WINE to run Word, would be a neat project, and a great experience in learning Linux..

Can't wait to crap Mandrake 7.2... Debian CD's are coming via mail :-) FREE OS, how neat.

An even more fun project would be getting the client software to run in wine....
