I want to be able to get files off my friend 98 computers on our LAN but have never used samba before. I have looked through the list of NHF's on this site but can't seem to find any. Any sugestions?

do a modprobe smbfs then type
smbmount \\computer_name\shared_directory \mount\point assumes you have samba installed and the modules are there, no need for a smb.conf unless you are sharing stuff from your computer.

If you really want to learn about Samba, check out "Using Samba" (you should find it under /usr/share/doc/packages/samba) or search O'Reilly's website (http://www.oreilly.com) for it. It is freely available there and is a very good book if you're interested in getting all out of Samba.

PB, I think your slashes are leaning the wrong way. You've been playing with DOS too long....

And, I agree, go to O'Reilly's Web site and download the book to maximize your enjoyment of Samba. BTW, there's a Samba NHF here at linuxnewbie.org. I didn't find it that useful, though.

I used the samba NHF and managed to obtain workable and useful results. Although I will be the first to admit that I did not really learn that much about samba, but if you simply want to quickly set up basic file sharing between a windows machine and a linux machine the NHF works just fine.
