i recently installed red hat 6.1, once i am logged in i type "startX", and i receive a hate message:

execve failed for /etc/x11/x (errno 2)
_x11TransSocketUNIXconnect: can't connect: errno = 111

giving up

Xinit: Connection refused (errno 111) unable to connect to Xserver
Xinit: no such process (errno 3): server error.

if anyone knows what to do next, or how to solve the problem, so i can load gnome, please let me know

What video card? Try running XF86Setup as root, then choose the X server that matches your card.

would that have anything to do with the problem? xserver seems to be the main problem in the hate message

Some cards use specific x servers, such as Mach 64 etc. Some however, use the generic SVGA server such as the riva 128. You will need to choose the card type, then choose which server to use. If you choose the wrong card or wrong server, it will puke when it tries to startx. So, if you let us know which card you have, we may be able to help.

I honestly don't know what that error is specifically trying to tell you, but like Radar says, the concept of the X Server is more or less analogous to that of a video driver in the Windows world, so choosing the right one is definitely necessary, and re-running XF86Setup is probably the easiest way to do that. Other options would be XConfigurator (or Xconfigurator - can't remember), which is a somewhat graphical menu driven setup that seems to work well in Red Hat 6.x; and xf86config, which is text based and question driven - not as easy, but gives you more granular control. And of course, you could examine /etc/X11/XF86Config, which is usually well commented when generated by the various setup programs mentioned above. I would also suggest looking for any comments about your card at the X Free 86 project web-site (http://www.xfree86.org), and even though it was written for SlackWare, this setup guide for X (http://www.slackware.com/book/index.php?source=c1364.html), is really good, and pretty much applies to any distro. Lastly, and obviously, you want to of course be sure there is nothing wrong with the card itself - ie, have you had it working recently under another OS...

Hope this is helpful.

Please try not to crosspost as it's not fair for others waiting for answers to their questions. Especially when you 'bump' your other post in Technical.

Post once in the appropriate forum and be patient. If someone knows the answer, you will get a reply.
