This is posted elsewhere on the site in the NHF's, but if you haven't read those yet (naughty naughty!) then here is a -very- helpful piece of advice, IMHO.
Check out the book by O'Reilly, 'Running Linux'. It is the best one that at least -I- have found, and it gives a lot of the methodologies behind naming conventions. After 8 chapters of reading I wasn't intimidated by my Linux box anymore (although I remain politely respectful of it, of course... http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/wink.gif).
