my first question is, is it possible to install a second distro with the first one, so that the second can use the packages and settings, or at least settings that are available on the first distro, or do i have to install and tweak everything again?

second, i dont really know what distro should i get. i have mandrake 8.0 now, and the only reason i want to get a new version is because i cant conpile anything. i've tried xmps, mplayer, gcc, and a lot of other stuff. one in every 10 can compile, the rest cannot. so i was thinking that since mandrake used some sort of uncommon version of gcc(that's what you guys told me), maybe some other distro tat uses a standard gcc can compile all those programs.

so what distro do you guys recommend(not redhat!!!). and more importantly, were you able to compile everything you wanted(including all these programs, or at least xmps and mplayer), right off the bat)

Try Debian. It's installer requires you to think, but it has an excellent package manager.
