Got this from http://www.linuxtoday.com
http://www.twcny.rr.com/technofile/texts/tec111200.html

This sounds great...I'm thinking of trying to resurrect an old P75 to give it a go.

Anyone else tried ?

I tried QNX in it's very early stage and I was impressed. At the time it was QNX on a floppy and it already had X installed. Pretty cool. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

I downloaded and burned the iso last night. installed it in a loop filesystem type of scenario from Windows(I didn't want to disturb my linux partitions). I have an SB awe64 and it doesn't seem to work in it but I haven't played long with it. It is very fast to boot and load up apps. One drawback was that I tried to get the 128 bit enxryption for the Voyager browser but you need to buy the upgrade license for this app. They even have GNU c++,python and perl. The standard install is pretty decent in terms of apps. It recommends at least a 600Meg partition and a 128Meg swap partition but this is still pretty good considering. It autodetected and installed a driver for my Voodoo 3 2000 AGP card so that wasn't bad.

It is very much a *nix-like OS. I want to try it out on one of my older PC's too but I don't have the time right now.

Oh, BTW, it automatically added itself as an option in config sys for Windows and didn't touch my lilo setup. It looks like it grabbed most of the config info directly from windows so I don't know how it will fare on its own. The reason I know it grabbed win info is that it setup my local lan IP, hostname and domain name as it is setup in windows.

Other than the annoying 128 bit upgrade license issue, I found it to be pretty good. I tried out one of the original 1.44 floppy loads of it way back when and it wasn't bad. They have definitely improved on it since then though.

By the looks of what I saw, it would be very good for older hardware.

I fyou like trying new things, give it a shot. I think you might like it.

Hi:

I've been using it for a long time. Really kicks. Not too many NICs are supported, though. Have it running on a desktop box, but can't get it going on the lappie due to PCMCIA issues. My card is an NE2K clone and QNX can't see it.

Really fast, though. It's my OS of choice for surfing.

And tigger--it's not *nix like, it is just one more flavour of *nix.

Al ( the guy at that site) mentioned QNX in the newspaper last week or so. You see his show or radio broadcast where you live?

Thanks for the post.... never heard of QNX. Dual booting with Deb and QNX now. Has a good look and feel. The GUI browser (Voyager) is the fastest I have used to date. The package manager seems to do a great job too. Limited amount of available programs but, what it has, it does nicely.A lot of potential here.

Regards,
Rod
