Does Mandrake 8.0 offer anything really significant over 7.0 for newbies. I ask because I already have 7.0 on CD and don't really want to spend ages downloading version 8.0?

Thanks In Advance

in my opinion, 7 is good, but 8 is better. There is better hardware support in 8. It uses the latest kernel, xfree86, glibc, kde and gnome. But if you cant download the latest version, stick with 7. Its still good. You might be able to update it to the latest distro withing mandrakes own update utility.

Well now it is behind with the kernel and xfree86 so I would be expecting 8.1 or 8.2 to be coming out very soon. Just what im thinking on the subject. So i would say wait before you download over a Gig, or spend your 30 bux.

I am using 7.2. My opinion is that if the current version works fine for you, and you are not missing a feature that you would gain by upgrading, then don't bother.

I have to have a compeling reason to upgrade, not just to be cutting edge.

I just got mandrakefreq last night.

I REALLY wanted x 4.1 because I have a radeon, and after botching up 3 installations just trying to get the damn thing installed and working, I figured I"d just go with the freq image instead.
