I just loaded mandrake 7.2 on my computer and x windows wont start. in the log file everything seams to be starting fine until it get to one line that say something about it cant operate with a depth of 24. if you need i can get the exact message in the morning and repost that. but what can i do to fix this?

hi,
did you setup X properly , start the box in the text mode by typing 'linux 3' at the lilo propmpt. then use Xconfigurator to set up X. what is your hardware ??? first try at 16bpp then try to configure X at 24bpp.

it does start in text. and i have tried XF86config to set it up but it still does the 24 bit depth. my hardware is a old gateway 2000 computer the video card is a ATI mach 64 card. i have had peanu linux up and running on this box before so i dont see why mandrake wont run.

set your default depth to 16
what version of x are you running.
