I'm running an old distro, Drake 6.0, so I'm always upgrading libraries to install applications. Lately I've found that my rpm-3.0.2-9 can't install some packages because "only packages with major numbers <= 3 are supported by this version of RPM." Thinking I need an updated version of RPM, I download rpm-4.0-18. Guess what? I can't install it because "only packages with major numbers <= 3 are supported by this version of RPM."

The old RPM can't install the new RPM. What the fsck is a newbie to do?

I read a post here within the last few days on the same topic. Seem to remember a solution was suggested. Perhaps search the main forums.

I found that rpm-3.0.6-6x can deal with major numbers > 3, so it should allow upgrading to rpm-4.0. Don't need to do that now, though. :D
