downlowding linux

I am having trouble just knowing what files to download, and don't understandyet what to do withit when I do. so far everything i have read is about as clear as mud. Can anyone help me know what files I need to get started?

What distribution are you looking to download?

I heartily recommend Debian to everyone (the learning curve is cheap, but it's far-and-away the best), which you can download from here (ftp://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/dists/stable/main/disks-i386/current/). Read the documentation in the doc directory and it'll tell you what to do.
