Can anybody recommend me good freeware for Linux? I'm new to Linux and would like to know the equivalent Linux software for the following Win 9X software:

Adobe Acrobat Reader
Download Accelerator / Go!Zilla
Innoculate IT
VCD PowerPlayer
A good C++ compiler
Internet security (i.e Firewall)

Please recommend me if there's anything useful. I'm going to use my comp for browsing the net (via modem), downloading files and learning C++.

I also need a program to allow users to set up PPP connections. The Linux PPP HOWTO mentioned about sudo. Where can I D/L that program, and are there any other alternatives?

Acrobat - xPDF

Innoculate IT - Don't need a virus checker in 'nix type OS'

C++ Complier - Er, 'make'

Firewall - IPChains (takes a little while to setup but works when you're done.)

Adobe Acrobat Reader : http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
Download Accelerator / Go!Zilla : Not sure what this is or does?
Innoculate IT : LOL no need no worries! Nothing available.
VCD PowerPlayer : VCD? Video?
A good C++ compiler : make : You have at least one C and one C++ compiler with your distro. You can also go here for others --> http://www.tru64unix.compaq.com/linux/compaq_cxx/
http://www.pgroup.com/
http://www.mathtools.net/C++/Compilers/
http://www.engin.umich.edu/labs/cpc/resources/software/linux/c.html

Internet security (i.e Firewall)
PortSentry! (http://www.psionic.com/abacus/portsentry)

FakeBo (http://cvs.linux.hr/fakebo/)

Firestarter (http://firestarter.sourceforge.net/)

GuardDog (http://www.simonzone.com/software/guarddog/)

That should keep you busy for a while! http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

FYI, your distro is really old - I'd strongly suggest updating to a more modern release (i.e. Redhat 6.1, 6.2, or 7.0). You can get $2 CDs from your local Linux Users Group, or www.cheapbytes.com (http://www.cheapbytes.com) - or just download the ISO or install via FTP for free.

(Sorry, I'd edit my post but then I couldn't quote others).

C++ Complier - Er, 'make'

'make' is not a compiler -- from `info make`:

The `make' utility automatically determines which pieces of a large
program need to be recompiled, and issues commands to recompile them.

If you're looking for a C++ compiler, check out G++, which is part of GCC, and made by GNU.

Adobe Acrobat Reader - try xpdf or gnome-gv (i.e. ggv).

Download Accelerator - there's really no need, but maybe wget? Try searching on freshmeat.net

I remember seeing a post here before about a gozilla type thing for linux. I forget what it was called, but typically as long as my download would not take more than 14 hours or so I had no problems in linux.

There are a number of pdf viewers in Linux, but the one from Adobe is nice just for the plugins for Netscape. I like not having to donload then open up a pdf file (usually some manual that I need to check one page for and then never look at again) in something else.

For video players check out Real Player or aKtion. I think most of this will already be on your cd but I haven't played with RH 6 in ages.
