I tried doing a search for this, but the search function here seems to be down.

I've made my first Linux only install (Slackware 7.1). Up until now, I've been dual-booting, so this is new territory for me. The only way to get the system to boot after the installation is to boot the CD first. I didn't think I'd need LILO, so I didn't install it (possibly I was wrong about this?). I don't have a floppy drive in the box yet, so I didn't do the boot floppy either. When I let the system try to boot from the hard drive, it just sits there.

If I do need LILO to load the system; can someone please post a typical single boot lilo.conf file to get me started? Thanks!

Yep, you need LILO (or grub), you can find a lilo.conf file on this NHF http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/compiling/kernel2.4upgrade.htmlIt's down towards the bottom.

Please, just don't install the Graphical LILO... It will make your nice Linux look like Window$$$...

Yep; I know about that trap already. When dual booting; one of the most perilous system breaks a newbie can face is when LILO won't boot anymore (something that I've found happened a lot when I had a graphical login setup). Typing startx in the terminal is a small price to pay ;).

Nick... I've tried all the major distros. Slack 4.0 was the first Intel based distro I installed on my laptop (LinuxPPC was my first Linux install). Slack 7.1 is a very nice improvement IMHO. As my sig reveals, I've pretty much settled in on Slackware, and Libranet/Debian. Installation problems can be kinda difficult to diagnose. My experience is that the partitioning scheme can be a common problem. Incompatable hardware is another. Hope your buddy hangs in there.
