I recently just installed mandrake 8.2 - i'm a newbie to the linux community - bu enjoying my stay :)

on my first looks around mandrake - i came across Xine - it plays my vcds no problem - i noticed it had a dvd tab - so i put in a dvd and pressed play - an error came up - stating it was unable to play ? is this a problem with my dvd rom or the software?

Check the config, by default it uses /dev/dvd as the device to run DVD's. Your DVD player is probally using something like /dev/cdrom? I had troubles with the config getting reset on me (With Ogle I think, BTW a GREAT DVD app!) so I had to make a sim link to get everything working. Try something like this (the Mandrake users will correct me if this is not the default setup for it...)

ln -s /dev/dvd /dev/cdrom
Of cource I maybe backwards with that, too early in the morning...

it is not necesarily a problem with your hardware at all. You may need to reset the dvd input device in xine as stated above (try /dev/dvd/hdc) but you should also check that you have libdvdcss installed in your computer and grabbing the dvdnav plugin from the xine homepage will help as well. You can get all the info you need here. Furthermore, download videolan and/or ogle. Both are (in my opinion) superior to xine.
You will need to download libdvdread and/or
libdvdcss. Go to www.freshrpms.net (http://www.freshrpms.net) for that.

actually... I installed libdvdcss and libdvdread and it still refuses to play DVDs. it gives me an error about not being able to find the file, or play the stream or something like that.

Mandrake 8.2 runs nice with ogle. Goto the following and download the rpms:
http://www.upinthispiece.net/linux/ogle

Install them. Some may not install, just ignore the errors (the messages that you will recieve are just telling you that certain libraries are needed, but those on your mandrake 8.2 system work already).

Run ogle. Watch DVD. The easiest just got easier.

I never got Xine to run right on my system (Dell Inspiron) with any number of distros (RH7, Slack 7.1 and 8, SuSE 7.2). OMS has always worked great for me in every distro.

Good luck.

I use to use Xine for DVD's but after trying Ogle for that...Xine is now only used for media files (.avi .mpeg...)
If you want to play DVD's perfectly use Ogle
